    NetWarsGL version 0.4 README
  ===============================

This is the remake of an old DOS multi player classic, programmed
by Edward Hill and released by Novell. It currently aims to recreate
the look & feel of the very first NetWars. Don't ask why; I just like
the old HUD and it was also much easier to program.
You may also use an Advanced NetWars-like HUD.

NOTE: This is an early version. You can only play in single player mode.
      The single player campaign does not work like in the original
	  NetWars.
	  There are lots of bugs and a lot of things that might not work
	  as expected.

    Quick start for the impatient
   ===============================

Defend the pods (purple) from the pirates. The controls are:

    mouse movement - turn ship
	left button    - fire
	W              - accelerate
	S              - decelerate
	SPACE          - launch a missile
	+              - increase radar zoom
	-              - decrease radar zoom
	F              - toggle FPS display

The radar (bottom center) shows purple lines for pods, green lines
for enemies, white lines for power-ups and yellow lines for missiles.
You are at the center of the radar. Lines pointing up indicate objects
that are above you, pointing down for objects below you. Just play a
little to get the feeling!

You may switch to fullscreen in the options menu, but this will only make your
window the same size as your desktop. There is no resolution switching yet (and
will probably never be). With Linux, the result of fullscreen switching depends
on your window manager.

    Known bugs
   ============

- Game may crash in later single player missions (some AI problem, pretty sure).
- Missing messages in HUD (warning for pods being attacked).
- Missing flying direction indicator. Does anyone need this?
- Missile may behave crazy if its target gets shot.
- Balancing needs some tweaking. Missile damage, spawn timing...
- Various minor issues.
- Single player campaign mechanics do not work like in NetWars.

    To do
   =======

- Multi player mode.
- More AI tuning.
- More menus.
- More flexible model formats.

    Credits
   =========

Respect to Mr Hill for making such an addictive game running on 386 PCs
with 25 MHz.
Thanks to J. T. Olds for keeping the myth alive for such a long time
and for sending me the original models.
Thanks and greetings to the ClanLib team. Without ClanLib, I most certainly
would have canceled the project when I saw the mess that is required to do
multi-platform network programming. The sound system is also ClanLib. Keep it
up, guys, and make it happen on Mac OS soon, please!
And of course thanks alot to the DOSBox team! This great program allows me to
play the original game even with Linux, and that's also how I got the beep-beep
PC speaker sounds.

Greetings to everyone else who keeps working on this.

    Licence stuff
   ===============

Dunno what to say here. Maybe I should point out that NetWarsGL is free
(as in freedom) software, so please re-distribute it, but do not charge
anything for it. If you re-distribute it, please keep this file with
the program.

    Still here?

I can't believe it, someone's reading all this! Now it's time to kick
some alien ass. Go. Go, now.
Have fun!
